It's incredible how often broken jewellery can be mistaken to be unrepairable. Something once admired and worn with love turns into something tucked aside in your jewellery box. You don't search for them, you don't wear them, and you almost forget about them.

What if that chain you love, or bracelet from your childhood, or crack in your Engagement Ring; what if we said there's a simple, reliable and affordable way to repair your jewellery. It's a standard Goldsmith practice called soldering.

JEWELLERY REPAIR - SOLDERING

Ara L. - Mar 16, 2022

Soldering is an essential skill set for a Goldsmith. It's a skill acquired early on in training and perfected through time. With varying reasons and circumstances, soldering is a dependable solution that can provide the perfect finish with structural integrity.

Common jewels that can be soldered:

  • Chains - break along the links
  • Chains - break at the end
  • Rings - crack in the shank
  • Pendants - crack in the bail

Chain Soldering

It's important to consider the specifics of your chain, such as width, overall thickness and operating components used (clasps and chain end). Visit our Necklace Guide page for a quick reference on the types of clasps available.

Specifically, if the width of your chain is narrow, approximately 1.5mm or less, the job requires more skill and precision. Depending on how delicate or narrow your chain is, you can expect minor imperfections with the final finishing. The minor flaw will not be visible to the naked eye, only seen upon close inspection.

Cracked Ring

Sometimes, a crack on your most beloved ring can be something innocent. It's been on your mind to wear a ring you love so much, but you're too worried to cause more damage than what's already there.

A minor crack in your ring is like a chip in your windshield. If you don't take care of it right away, it will eventually spread and cause more significant problems. When visiting your local Goldsmith, upon inspection, you'll find out if you can quickly solder the crack on your band. The quick reaction time will save you from the expensive repairs mentioned in our Common Repairs article.

Broken Stud Earrings

You've had a pair of diamond stud earrings for as long as you can remember but haven't worn them for how long? Yes, the delicate stud earrings tend to give out over time and even completely break off.

Luckily, a relatively inexpensive fix, especially if you found the broken post. That skill developed over the years by your favourite Goldsmith can have your favourite diamond stud earrings back together. It's reliable and structurally sound to put confidence into you wearing them again.

When it comes to methods used to solder, it's important to note two variations used in the industry: Laser and Torch welding. While each welding technique has its benefits, they are also equally reliable. The technicality is that Laser welding helps reduce our carbon footprint in an industry with a lot of room to improve. When it comes to your jewellery specifically, visit your jeweller you can rely on, one you can count on that provides you with the confidence you need to work with them.

I have a gold chain bracelet that I treasure a lot since it was a gift from my late grandfather, but the chain accidentally broke the other way when I slipped and hit the bracelet against the pavement. It caught my attention when you mentioned that chain breaking can be fixed by soldering while considering the specifics like width, overall thickness, and operating components. I’ll keep this in mind while I look for jewelry repairs around town this weekend. https://www.fredrickjewelersmi.com/jewelrydesigners
